12 Prom Invitation Ideas to Set the Tone
5/18/2026
These days, invitations often materialize on a phone screen. But like so many things, the pendulum swung too virtual, and we’re collectively yearning for the physical. Vinyl records are selling again. Photo printing is up. The everything-on-a-screen years turned out to have a flip side: there are some things you want to hold in your hand.
Prom is one of those nights worth a keepsake. Printed prom invitations go on corkboards, in memory boxes, scrapbooks, or wherever keepsakes are stashed.
There’s a second, more practical reason a print is the right move: committees already have a hundred decisions to make. Vendors. Decor. Music. Catering. Tickets. The dress code debate. The “what do we do about the after-prom” discussion. An invitation you can pick a template for, fill-in-the-blanks, and have printed and shipped within a business day is one less thing to worry about.
Below are twelve themes that come back year after year, the wording to match each.
Prom Invite Ideas for a Night to Remember
1. Masquerade
Black, gold, jewel tones, ornate masks, plus a little Venetian drama and intrigue. This iconic prom theme can lean into the idea of a costumed ball or masks combined with black tie. Either way, masquerade ball invitations conveying this theme’s magic and mystery will get everyone excited about the event!
For wording:
Reveal Yourself. The Class of 2026 invites you to a Masquerade. Saturday, May 16 — The Grand Ballroom — 7 p.m. til midnight. Black tie. Masks encouraged. $40.
2. Hollywood Glamour
Roll out the red carpet! There are so many ways to conjure that unmistakable “Best Picture” energy. You could go the old-Hollywood route or create a modern awards-show feel with a step-and-repeat photo wall and a paparazzi-style entrance. Either way, attendees will feel like superstars!
For wording:
And the Class of 2026 Presents… A Night on the Red Carpet. May 9 — The Plaza — Doors at 7. Stars arrive in formal attire.
Matching VIP credentials instead of tickets for entry and access will add to the A-list experience.

3. Enchanted Forest
Stepping into a fairytale is a magical way to round out the year. This theme is fast gaining popularity, no doubt because soft greens, fairy lights, moss, twisted branches, and fantasy are never wrong. Plus, there’s flexibility as far as aesthetic. A classic A Midsummer Night’s Dream event is enchanting, as is an event that’s giving A Court of Thorns and Roses (ACOTAR).
For wording:
Step Into Starfall. The Class of 2026 invites you to a night where the path is lit, the music is magic, and the woods know your name. Friday, April 17 — The Conservatory — 7 to 11 p.m.
4. Starry Night / Under the Stars
Deep navy, silver foil, constellation maps, a touch of celestial whimsy. Whether you take it in an astrology or astronomy direction, it’s always about the moon and starlight.
For wording:
A Night Among the Stars. Class of 2026 — May 23 — 8 p.m. til midnight. Formal attire. Wishes optional.
5. Great Gatsby / Roaring Twenties
Black, gold, champagne, flappers, and jazz. Dressy, opulent, and super-glamour are the buzzwords for this one.
For wording:
Welcome to West Egg. The Class of 2026 requests the pleasure of your company at our Gatsby prom. May 2 — 7 p.m. — The Manor House. Black tie. Optional flapper or 1920s flair.
6. 1980s Throwback
Neon, geometric shapes, cassette tapes, vivid color and everything over the top. A favorite for after-prom parties too, since the energy is high and the dress code extra fun. Look for 80s prom invitation layouts with bold gradients and bubble fonts — they sell the theme instantly.
For wording:
Rewind to Prom. Class of 2026 takes it back to the ’80s. Saturday, April 25 — The Gym Reimagined — 7 to 11. Neon, layered bracelets, and leg warmers encouraged.
A bonus pairing: glow-in-the-dark wristbands at the door turn an ’80s prom into an instant after-dark party.
7. Met Gala
Pure runway energy. Editorial fashion, bold individual interpretation, and a night that photographs like a Vogue spread.
For wording:
The Class of 2026 Met Gala. Theme: — to be revealed. Saturday, May 16 — The Grand Ballroom — 7 p.m. til midnight. Dress code: Interpret the theme. Editorially.

8. Fire and Ice
The whole theme lives in the contrast. Deep reds and oranges on one side, icy blues and silver on the other, and a stretch in the middle where the two collide. Photogenic, modern, and just dramatic enough.
For wording:
Where Fire Meets Ice. Class of 2026 — A Prom of Contrasts. Saturday, May 16 — The Grand Ballroom — 7 p.m. til midnight. Formal attire. $40.

9. Regency/Bridgerton
Pastel palettes, wisteria draped over arched doorways, chandeliers, candelabras, and gold details wherever you look. Ask guests to go full Regency in period-inspired gowns, and open festivities with a waltz, or skew modern with pastel opulence and a string quartet playing pop covers. Either way, a “Lady Whistledown” gossip column as the night’s program lands every time.
For wording:
Dearest Reader, You are invited to the Season’s most anticipated event. The Class of 2026 Prom Ball — Saturday, May 16. The Grand Ballroom — 7 p.m. til midnight. Formal attire. Gloves optional.

10. A Night in Paris
The most romantic theme on the list. An Eiffel Tower silhouette, string lights overhead, sidewalk-café table settings, soft pinks against black and gold. Effortlessly elegant, and always in style.
For wording:
Bonjour, Class of 2026. You are invited to A Night in Paris. Saturday, May 16 — The Grand Ballroom — 7 p.m. til midnight. Formal attire. Berets optional, romance encouraged.
11. Sneaker Ball
A fashion mashup — formal attire paired with statement sneakers, from limited editions to custom-painted pairs. The theme started with Nike’s Black Employee Network during Black History Month and grew into prom culture for one good reason: it lets students show their personality through their shoes and dance the whole night.
For wording:
Dress to impress. Lace up to dance. The Class of 2026 Sneaker Ball — Saturday, May 16. The Grand Ballroom — 7 p.m. til midnight. Formal attire. Best kicks welcome.

12. Studio 54 / Disco Glamour
Disco balls are everywhere on Pinterest for prom this year. Think gold lamé, mirrored silver, sequins, satin, and 1970s Saturday Night Fever energy. Glamorous and as cool as Studio 54, this theme encompasses everything from roller skates and leotards to bell bottoms and swirly skirts.
For wording:
On the Guest List: The Class of 2026. Studio 54 Prom — Saturday, May 16. The Grand Ballroom — 7 p.m. til midnight. Glam attire. Sequins, sequins, sequins.

A Note on Prom Send-Off Party Invitations
If your family is throwing a separate pre-prom party usually at someone’s house with parents, friends, and a whole lot of photos, you’ll want a slightly different invitation. Send-off invites are more personal, the tone is warmer, and the practical details lean toward parking, photo spots, and what to bring.
A few wording prompts that work:
Before the night begins, the photos. Join us for ’s prom send-off — Saturday, May 16, 4:30 p.m., at the Johnson home. Cameras encouraged. Light refreshments. Limos arrive at 6.
Pre-Prom Send-Off for the Class of 2026. Family, friends, and a few photos before they’re off. Sunday, May 9, 5 p.m.
